Resistance Indices Development

To develop two indices, participants who do not use illicit drugs as adults are classified into three resistance groups based on a measure of childhood liability to SU, the transmissible liability index (TLI). Three resistance groups are: (1) High Outset Resistance (HOR; low TLI score); (2) High Realized Resistance (HRR; high TLI score); (3) Average Resistance (AR; intermediate TLI score). Behavioral items that discriminate between the high-resistance groups and the AR group are selected, calibrated using item response theory analysis. These validated items generate the two resistance indices, HORI and HRRI, across the sample, enabling the identification of resistance factors with the highest probability to influence resistance against SU.
